The soprano Julia Grüter, originally from North Rhine-Westphalia, has been a permanent member of the ensemble at the Staatstheater Nürnberg since the 2018/19 season. She has appeared in numerous productions there since then. In 2020, she sang the title role in La Calisto.
In 2021/22, she made her debut in three major roles: Micaëla (Carmen), Mélisande (Pelléas et Mélisande) and Sophie (Der Rosenkavalier). She made a further role and house debut as Zdenka (Arabella) at the Aaltheater Essen.
At the Bayreuth Festival in 2023, Julia Grüter appeared for the first time as a Flower Maiden (Parsifal) and as a Young Shepherd (Tannhäuser).
In the summer of 2024, she made a guest appearance at the Komische Oper Berlin in a staged production of Handel’s Messiah at the Tempelhof Hangar. At the end of the 2024–25 season, Julia Grüter sang the part of the Forest Bird in a concert performance of Wagner’s Siegfried at the Teatro Comunale di Bologna.
Numerous concerts have taken the soprano across Europe; particularly noteworthy are her appearances as a soloist in works such as Bach’s Christmas Oratorio, Haydn’s The Creation, Mendelssohn’s Elias, Mahler’s Symphony No. 4, and the Requiems by Mozart and Brahms. She has worked with conductors such as Joana Mallwitz, Vladimir Jurowski, Markus Poschner and Oksana Lyniv. In May 2025, she made her North American debut performing Beethoven’s Missa solemnis with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Nathalie Stutzmann.
Julia Grüter initially studied music pedagogy, specialising in singing under Sabine Toliver. She then completed a degree in classical singing at the Münster University of Music under Dr Zelotes Edmund Toliver, graduating with top marks and an opera certificate. She continues to work closely with both teachers to this day. Her training was further enhanced by masterclasses with, amongst others, KS Brigitte Fassbaender and Mireille Delunsch. Before joining the Nuremberg ensemble, Julia Grüter was a member of the Upper Austrian Opera Studio at the Landestheater Linz for two seasons.
Julia Grüter was the second-prize winner at the 2015 International Lieder Duo Competition in Ratingen. In 2017, she impressed at the Linz Operetta Competition and was awarded both first prize and the audience prize. At one of the most important competitions of our time, the ARD International Singing Competition, she prevailed against several hundred competitors in 2021 and won third prize.
