A Mexican flamenco dancer and choreographer, Karen Lugo is deeply knowledgeable of and respectful toward tradition. Her unique and personal style has led her to collaborate with renowned artists such as Pepe Habichuela, Jorge Pardo, Silvia Pérez Cruz, Chano Domínguez, Amir Haddad, and Hans Zimmer, among many others.
As a choreographer, she has received several awards, including Best Choreography Award at the Spring Film Festival in Barcelona, First Prize for Flamenco Dance at the International Festival of Almería, First Prize for Choreography at the Contemporary Flamenco Festival in Finland, and Third Prize for Choreography at the XVII Spanish and Flamenco Dance Certamen in Madrid.
She has been invited as guest choreographer for companies such as Flamenco Vivo (Carlota Santana, New York), Shoji Kojima Company (Japan ), Alante Flamenco (Texas), Flamenco Rosario Cia (Vancouver), La Otra Orilla (Montreal), and Marco Flores Cia, among many others.
She has produced several solo and collaborative performances, including AMORENTE (with José Maldonado and Nino de los Reyes), Golpe de Tierra (nominated by the Premis de la Crítica d’Arts Escèniques in the category of Best Solo Performance), and Tres Piezas (with Juan Gómez »Chicuelo« and José Maldonado), which received the Guitarra con Alma Award at the Jerez Festival and the Audience Award at the Palma del Río.
With the support of the National System of Art Creators (Mexico), she began a new phase of artistic research for the creation of her latest production, El Ombligo de la Luna.
She currently serves as Guest Artistic Director for Flamenco Vivo Company (Carlota Santana, New York) and Flamenco Nómada Festival (Geneva). She also works as choreographer and performer in the productions Caminos by Juan Gómez »Chicuelo«, IO (with Aleix Tobias, Momi Maiga, Carles Dénia, and Guillem Aguilar), and CAYANA by Anna Colom.
