­With its exceptional enthusiasm, curiosity and artistic independence, Ensemble Resonanz explores new perspectives on music and counts as one of the world’s most versatile chamber orchestras. The democratically organised 21-piece string orchestra works without a permanent conductor and understands music as a dialogue between eras, worlds and people: A classical repertoire stands next to contemporary compositions, the familiar is set in motion and opens new perspectives on listening.

Artistic partners play a central role: the conductor Riccardo Minasi accompanies the Ensemble as »Principal Guest Conductor & Partner in Crime« and shapes the profile with unmistakeable, often surprising interpretations of classical composers like Mozart and Beethoven. Moreover, close artistic ties have been forged with violist Tabea Zimmermann and cellist Jean-Guihen Queyras. During the current season, Ensemble Resonanz works, amongst others, with Patricia Kopatchinskaja, Charly Hübner, Anna Prohaska, Pablo Ferrández, Momi Maiga and Giorgi Gigashvili on new programmes between concert and performative formats; additionally, they perform premières with Enno Poppe, Rebecca Saunders, Judith Weir and Ann Cleare.

Since the opening of the Elbphilharmonie, Ensemble Resonanz is the venue’s resident orchestra. The concert series »resonanzen«, which has shaped Hamburg’s music scene for over two decades, is the heart of the residence. Furthermore, the Ensemble organises children’s concerts as well as festival projects and develops concert formats which constantly bring classical and contemporary music into new relations.

In Hamburg’s district St. Pauli, Ensemble Resonanz has founded its own rehearsal, concert and club space – a place where classical music is reimagined and made tangible. The Europe-wide unique chamber music club connects classical music with club culture and discourse and opens room for new formats and meetings. In the series »urban string«, chamber music meets electronic art; the programmes are organised and moderated by the musicians themselves. Open rehearsals, listening hours and philosophy discussions in the bunkersalon open additional spaces for experiences.
